The event was organized by Better2gether, a nonprofit that supports Central Virginia families whose children have rare and complex medical conditions.
Since 2018, the organization has provided mentorship, counseling and recreational programs for families navigating complex medical diagnoses. It also connects families with resources to help manage treatment and related expenses.
Better2gether works closely with the Complex Care Unit at Childrens Hospital of Richmond at VCU, which is designed to support families facing challenging medical needs.
With more than 7,000 rare diseases affecting children, Better2gether Executive Director Stephanie Becker said there is a significant need for resources and support that help families feel understood and less alone.
When you get a bunch of individual diagnoses, theres no organization dedicated to that one disease, so Better2gether really brings these families together, not based on a diagnosis, but brings families on the journey they face caring for a child who has a rare and chronic illness, Becker said.
Following the 5K and Kids Run, families enjoyed a costume contest, prize giveaways and a fall festival.
